ON THE RAZZLE*
Director: Donna Northcott
Stage Manager: Alyssa Murphy
Assistant Stage Manager: Amber Berry

[*On the razzle: A euphemism, often used by the British press, to describe the actions of a celebrity who has drunk, or is about to drink, a considerable amount of alcohol.]

ON THE RAZZLE by Tom Stoppard is based on the 19th century Austrian play Einen Jux will er sich Machen, which was the basis for Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker, which was the basis for Hello, Dolly! In brief, Razzle is Hello, Dolly! Without the music. And without Dolly. Weinberl and Christopher are employees in Herr Zangler’s grocery on the outskirts of Vienna. Zangler – along with his new assistant, Melchior – is going to Vienna to propose to Madame Knorr, his fiancée, leaving Weinberl and Christopher in charge of the store. As Zangler puts it:

“Why do I have a sense of impending disaster? Sonders is after my niece and has discovered the secret address where I am sending her to the safe keeping of my sister-in-law Miss Blumenblatt, who has never laid eyes on him, or, for that matter, on Marie either since she was a baby – while I have to leave my business in the charge of my assistant and an apprentice, and follow my new servant, whom I haven’t had time to introduce to anyone, to town to join the parade and take my fiancée to dinner in a fashionable restaurant in a uniform I can’t sit down in. One false move and we could have a farce on our hands.”
Content Warnings: chaste kissing, a character is carried onstage with her bloomers showing, a character changes clothes on stage but is wearing long johns, lots of running around and physical comedy
